Reporting misfiled pages in the diary of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade 4th RHA - which are not out of orde Seem to belong to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery

  • marie.eklidvirginmedia.com by marie.eklidvirginmedia.com

Moderator I would like to report misfiled pages in the diary of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade 4th RHA. All the pages are running in sequence. Pages are all Intelligence Summaries. Pages (212/213/214/215).

    Page 212 https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003k9p
Intelligence Summary, has the ref to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery but it is with pages for 3rd Cavalry Division. I have commented that this is #misfiled.

    Page 213 a continuation page https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003ke8
signed by a Lt. for the 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery. I have commented that this is #misfiled.

Page 214: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003ker has the ref to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery but it is with pages for 3rd Cavalry Division. I have commented that this is #misfiled.

Page 215 a Continuation page https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003kef has the ref to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery but it is with pages for 3rd Cavalry Division. I have commented that this is #misfiled.

I must mention also because of this confusion I may have inadvertently tagged the pages from 216 to 220 for these Intelligence Summaries as - ref to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery instead of 3rd Cavalry Divisional Artillery. I have commented: #error may have tagged Ref to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery instead of 3rd Cavalry Divisional Artillery on pages 216-220.

    Link page 216 https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003kg0

Because I can only go back this afternoon 12th June, to my last 10 profile pages I am not sure if pages 205 to 210 should also be queried as regards to 2nd Cavalry Divisional Artillery. Please accept my apologies for this confusion if you have to check out these pages. Doesn’t seem to have been a good afternoon!

Thanks for the information, Marie. And thank you for all the effort you put in.

This particular diary is just a mess. There's no other way to put it. We discovered this when Erik tagged it several months ago.

I just went back and checked through old threads and Erik did mention it, too. Rob thought perhaps the two cavalry divisions were working together, or at least their artillery was. It's hard to say without digging back through the 2nd Cavalry Division diaries, too.

I think with this diary, we just have to accept it as is, and try to capture what information we can from it.

Thanks for your reply Cynthia, I agree with your comments regarding this diary.

I will just carry on with it and tag exactly what I see, and will place a comment in the comment box of the diary page, if I think it necessary to the page in question. Seeing that this diary has already been reported 'as a mess'. Pity because it seems an interesting diary.

I've tagged a fair bit of this diary too, and it is interesting. But Cynthia's absolutely right - it's such a mess all we can do is tag what we can. And I'll add my voice to Cynthia's in saying thanks for sticking with it 😃

Cynthia/Rob, Information regarding diary of 3rd Cavalry Brigade 4th RHA

Regarding Rob’s comment, in connection with the confusion of this diary. i.e. “ Rob thought perhaps the two cavalry divisions were working together, or at least their artillery was”

I think Rob is correct when he says this as according to the page link: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003kg9 p. 241 (profile page number 242) which is Table A.1V. It states:

(A). Support for 2nd Cavalry Division by Artillery of 3rd Cavalry Division.
(B). Support for 3rd Cavalry Division by Artillery of 2nd Cavalry Division.

PS Interesting comment by the Author regarding this Diary page 201 - link: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003kg3

“No record of messages sent or received during operations are attached, as they all became unreadable due to snow and mud. 30th April 1917”

Thanks for the update, Marie. That seemed like the most likely explanation for the inclusion of those pages. Nice to see it confirmed!

I always enjoy finding comments like the one you mention - although it would have been interesting to see the messages, the fact we know why they weren't included gives an extra dimension to what we read, doesn't it? Makes it even more real.

Ral, here are some messages that I had tagged and commented on.

Re 3 CAVALRY DIVISION: 4 Brigade Royal Horse Artillery

    Page 232 Link: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003k9d

Most of them from Major Wood on page 231 – Entries for 26th June 1917.

These are for June though, although Author commented no records etc with the date 30th April 1917.

The weather apparently a lot better in June - no snow. I remember the Author commenting that there were a lot of snow blizzards, winds and mud in April 1917 when they were going into action. As though they did not have enough to put up with!

PS on page 232 - There is a reference to a slow rate barrage “please continue barrage at slow rate to cover collecting parties”.

Thanks for those links, Marie. I agree - it must have been absolutely dire dealing with those conditions on top of everything else.

I've read about the snow the troops at Arras in April 1917 had to deal with. It always sounds like utter misery for both men and horses.
