Mis-filed or mis-labelled diaries

  • ral104 by ral104 moderator, scientist

    @HeatherC's original post:

We seem to have a few of these now where the diary is labelled as one
thing in the header title but when you look at the diary pages you
find it's something else. I'm going to try to collect example in this
thread rather than having loads of different threads.

Can people also use the hashtag #misfiled to indicate pages that don't
agree with their title or seem to be out of place?

    Link to previous thread: http://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/boards/BWD000000g/discussions/DWD000091r

Pages 156-182 (inclusive) of the diary labelled as 1 CAVALRY DIVISION: 1 Signal Squadron Royal Engineers (1 Aug 1914 — 31 Aug 1919) are from a totally different unit - looks like a MVS. They are for the month of October and have been somehow inserted between the Oct 1915 cover page and the October 1915 diary pages of the Signal Squadron Diary. There is no year, no Unit name (though it's obviously an MVS) and no signature or name of diarist given in the inserted pages.

Thanks to @141Dial34 for spotting this.

In the 119th (Meerut) Field Ambulance, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division diary I found 5 pages (p. 32-37 inclusive) that don't belong there. They are two sets of two-page orders and a cover sheet. The cover sheet says 19 B. F. A., which is one of the units mentioned in both sets of orders. No where in the orders is the 119th Indian Cavalry Field Ambulance listed. The orders relate to reliefs and are clearly for Indian infantry units from the Dehra Dun brigade.

Furthermore, these pages, all dated in January 1915, suddenly pop up between 11 March 1915 and 12 March 1915 in the 119th's diary. There is a possible reason for this location. On 12 March, the C.O. of the 119th states that he has just that day sent in his diary up to and including 11 March. That statement does make it plausible that additional papers might have been inadvertently added to the diary at that point at some time between then and now.

To clarify - (1) The Title of the 2nd Cav. Div. 4th Cavalry Field Ambulance states 1st Aug 1914-31st May 1919. 397 pages. The pages have all been in sequence up to page 397. But (2) The last page I tagged for the 4 Cav. Field Ambulance was page 380 14th-20th April 1919. (3) Next page 381 was a duplicate cover page for April 1919. There were no more diary pages for 4th Cav. Field Ambulance. So this diary ended at page 380 and there were no diary pages from here to end, therefore missing pages from 20th April 1919 to 31st May 1919. (4) The rest of the pages from 382 to 397 were for the Diary of the 5th Cavalry Field Ambulance as reported to you as #misfiled. (5) Also The missing pages for the diary of 4th Cavalry Field Ambulance for Month of November 1917 (as reported to you as missing, did not turn up in the diary of the 4th Cavalry Field Ambulance.

Hope you can understand all these comments - some of the pages at the end of the diary were quite confusing. Pity it ended at 20th April 1919 and I was not able to read the rest of the story of these men as I thought it would go on to 31st May 1919. I hope all the link references help you when checking the diary.

This account of a raid by an Australian division appeared in the diary for the 1 DIVISION: 1 Infantry Brigade: 1 Battalion Cameron Highlanders: http://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD00032g7.

I've been tagging it as #misfiled as I don't see any relation to the unit in question but if I come across a reference or if you think there is a reason in should be there, I will delete the hashtags.

  • ral104 by ral104 moderator, scientist

It looks like it might be one of those things which appears in a diary because copies were distributed to all adjutants in a division or similar. Could be that the Australians were operating adjacent to the Cameron Highlanders, so they received notice of the raid.

I think I'd be tempted to just tag this as #alliedrelations, but it's really a judgement call. You know the diary better than I do at this point, so if you think it's definitely misfiled, then by all means keep using the tag.

I've got a misfiled diary to report: 1st Division; 1st Infantry Brigade; 1st Cameron Highlanders (31 Dec. 1917-30 Aug. 1918). It runs along nicely, all in order until it reaches the July 1918 cover sheet, p. 86; this is actually in place. After that, though, come two pages of orders dated 4 Aug. and 3 Aug., followed by the Aug. 1918 cover sheet at p. 89. Then comes the August diary, which only takes up one page, followed by a signal message and two more orders for 3 Aug. and 2 Aug. The July diary, again one page only, finally appears on page 94.

After p. 94 everything runs in order again. Orders for July run from page 95 through page 136. Page 137 picks up with an order dated 4 Aug.; August orders continue on to the end of the diary at page 181.

I think everything is there. With 40 some pages of orders for each of July and August, 1918, I don't see how anything could be missing! Just those few pages from 87 to 93 are in the wrong place and somewhat jumbled.

We've received this email from a volunteer working on 2 Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps.

Howdy- I'm currently doing your project Operation War Diary. I'd like
to get a message to them, but there is no 'Contact' link on their
site, so please forward this to them if you can.

The diary titled '1 Division: 2 Infantry Brigade: 2 Battalion Kings'
Royal Rifle Corps (30 Jun 1915 - 30 Aug 1915)' has some problems:

---The pages I've tagged so far are from January 1915, which isn't in the range of dates given in the title above

--- The page I'm on now is given as 'Page -148 of 120'

--- All of the text I've read so far is obviously from an Ambulance, not a Rifle Corps

So, I think the diary has the wrong title.

The diary labeled 2 Division: 44th Brigade Royal Field Artillery (31 Jul 1914 - 29 Apr 1916) seems to actually be for the 2nd Div. Ammunition Column. It begins on 5 Aug. 1914.

The first page does indeed show a cover page for the 44th Brigade R. F. A., but after that it is all Ammunition Column, at least as far as page 7, which is as far as I have gone. All in order this far as well.

I'm not sure if this is a case of mis-filed diaries or if perhaps they just don't exist, but thought I would post here just in case.

I've been tagging 2 Division: Divisional Troops: Divisional Trench Mortar Batteries (31 Aug 1917-30 Dec 1918). There are three batteries: X/2, Y/2, and Z/2. (Heavy battery was disbanded in Nov. 1917.) For Feb. 1918 there is no diary for Z/2 battery, and for March 1918 no diary for both Y/2 and Z/2 batteries.

These might perhaps have something to do with the German offensive of 22 Mar. as they were caught in it, but surely if they survived there must be at least reports from the C.O.s. X/2 battery seems to have gotten away clear. That diary only states that they burned stores and records and then lists all the places they moved to while withdrawing.

Marie, you've found at least part of my answer. According to the 2nd Division page on the Long, Long Trail, Z battery was broken up on 24 Feb. so there wouldn't be any diaries for Z battery after January. It's funny. None of the diaries mention Z battery being broken up.

The March diary for Y/2 battery turned up after the April diary for X/2 battery, followed by the April Y/2 battery. However, I think that Y/2's March diary should follow that of X/2 and come before X/2's April diary.

Rob, I just may have been confusing in my previous post. Basically, the order of diaries was this: X/2 battery Feb.; Y/2 bat. Feb; X/2 March; X/2 April; Y/2 March; Y/2 April. The cover sheets for the two March and two April diaries were labeled with just the single battery.

After the end of Y/2 April, the next cover sheet, which is as far as I have gotten, is for both batteries for the month of May.

It seems that everything is there, unless there was a partial February diary for Z/2 battery before it disbanded. The only actual issue is that the March diary for Y/2 Battery should come before the April diary for X/2 Battery.

This probably isn't really any clearer, is it?

No, that makes perfect sense 😃

I don't think you were unclear earlier, but it was quite late when I read the post and I had just enjoyed a glass of red wine...

I'll note it down as a case of out of order sections.

I've been tagging 1st Division: Divisional Trench Mortar Batteries which have been alternating between X/1 and Y/1, and have got up to the end of January 1919.

I've suddenly come across a diary labelled 1st Trench Mortar Battery (for Jan 1919) which doesn't seem to connect with what I've seen in the other 2 diaries. This was followed by a similar page for the end of March 1919. Not sure whether these are misfiled or not, so tagged them with "#misfiled ?"

    Update
Now on the diary for May, which is labelled 1st Western Trench Mortar Battery, and also 1st LTM Bty

RE: 2 DIVISION: DIVISIONAL TROOPS: DIVISIONAL TRENCH MORTAR BATTERIES (31 Aug 1917-30 Dec 1918): Aside from the two months that are in reverse order, as noted above, the remainder of the diaries are in good order, running though to the end of December 1918.

However, after that there are four months of diaries from the 41st Light Trench Mortar Battery covering Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec., 1918. These should be with the 14th Division.

It is apparent that this unit was not attached in any way to the 2nd Division Trench Mortar Batteries, as they are not even in the same area of the front. The 41st L.T. M. B. was in operations around Ypres in September and then moved southeast near Tourcoing and Roubaix, while the 2nd Division T. M. B. were operating south of Cambrai during this period. There is also no mention in the 41st L. T. M. B. diary of being attached to anything but the 41st Inf. Bde.

I went ahead and tagged this diary. I also hashtagged the first cover sheet as #misfiled, but not the remainder of the 13 pages.

I'm wondering if it is just the author's handwriting? I sometimes have trouble distinguishing between 4 and 7 in the diaries. I don't know if it's because as an American I'm used to seeing less embellished numbers or if it is just the changes in handwriting that have come along over the past 100 years.

I'm not trying to question your judgement. Just offering an alternative interpretation.

followed the LAST PAGE OF THE DIARY page (1017) for October 1919. NOTE: This Diary does not end on this page. It goes on to #outoforder Cover page (1018) dated 1918-October 1919.
THEN the missing Month for January 1919 begins to turn up, which is page (1019) an #outoforder Cover page. Link: http://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003ak8

The next page (1020) is dated 1st and 2nd January – but no year on page – but must be January 1919 which I will tag next. I have marked pages 1015, 1016, 1017, 1018 1019, 1020 #outoforder. I will let you know if the missing Diary pages for months of Feb/March and September 1919 turn up. I hope you can understand all this.

I'm tagging a section of it that is labeled 31 Jul 1916-30 Dec. 1916. It has 392 pages and I came in at page 260 or thereabouts.

Every page I have tagged so far has been dated 1917. They seem to be in order although there have been a couple of jumps where apparently five taggers have already finished.

There is also another diary posted on the Diaries page for the same unit that is labeled from 31 Mar. 1917-29 Nov. 1917. The pages I've seen would seem to belong to that section.

Ral, With reference to the diary of the 5th Division, 95th Infantry Brigade, 1st Btn DCLI. I wonder if this information will help you regarding the query from Cyngast. According to my notes I tagged the diary for the 1st Btn DCLI in 2014. I tagged the diary DCLI for 1st Jan 1916 to 31st August 1916 starting at page 23 for 21/25 Feb 1916. All the pages ran in sequence to page 175, the end of the diary. The August Diary pages were – P. 143 Cover page, P. 144 another cover page, P. 145 for 1-12 Aug 1916. P. 146 13-27 Aug 1916, P. 147 28-31 Aug 1916. (The pages running from 147 to 175 were nominal rolls/orders/field returns/casualty lists).

I am now tagging the 5th Division, 95th Infantry Brigade, 1st Btn DCLI for 1st April 1917 to 30 November 1917. Started at page 74 of 233 pages.

The other diary posted for the DCLI is dated 1st August 1916-31st Dec 1916 – 392 pages. These dates of August 1916 are conflicting with the diary I tagged in 2014. i.e. I tagged the August 1916 diary pages from the 1st to 31 August 1916. See first paragraph. Hope you can understand this.

I've noticed a lot of the Machine Gun Corps diaries don't seem to be labelled very informatively. I wonder if it's because the units changed so frequently during the course of their existence.

I don't think it would have any bearing here, but most of the Machine Gun Corps records were lost very soon after the end of the war when their HQ burned down.

I'm doing 2 Div Trench Mortar Batteries. I've just noticed from the annotations at the top of pages that the diary seems to randomly switch between X and Y Batteries; in fact, some pages are out of order date-wise, but may also be out of order battery-wise, although I haven't noticed any context anomalies. Is this OK? I don't know anything about RA(was a a donkey walloper myself) so I don't really understand the regimental set-up.

    Posted

  • ral104 by ral104 moderator, scientist in response to fisfiris's comment.

It sounds like it should be fine - we can deal with out of order dates without too many problems, as long as sections aren't missing. The switching between batteries should also be fine, as we don't really distinguish between them in the tags - all the data 'belongs' to the unit as a whole.

X and Y batteries (and Z as well) were medium mortar units, attached to each division. The light units operated at brigade level. If you ever come across a V battery, those were the heavies.

109 Infantry Brigade: 1 Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (31 Jan. 1918-30 Mar. 1919): There's a spot in this diary where things are a bit mixed up. Following the April 1918 diary, the next page is the start of another month, but is also dated April. I am certain it is actually May. (I was sure enough of that that I tagged it as May.)

But following the page dated the 30th is a series of orders (about 8 pages) all dated April 1918, which correspond to the unit's activities as recorded in the April diary. There are also 2 maps and then a cover sheet for May, 1918.

Following that, the next page is dated only as the 30th (month not included), but the narrative follows from the prior page dated the 30th, before the orders/maps/cover sheet. The next page is definitely dated 30/5/18 and 31/5/18, which is why I am certain that the second diary dated as April is actually May. The April date only appears on the first page of that diary; after that there are only numbers for the days.

I have now gotten to a cover page for June, which is in the right place.

    Posted

  • ral104 by ral104 moderator, scientist

Sounds like the author must have made a mistake - I think you were right to tag it as May. In this case, I think the best thing is to just leave a comment to that effect on the page (I'm sure you've already done that, but I can't see this new batch of diaries in our back end system yet.) I'll add it to the list as well and maybe the pages might get reshuffled by TNA.

    Posted

  • cyngast by cyngast moderator

I left several comments that I hope are helpful rather than confusing! I suspect that the orders ended up where they are because 1) the May diary was dated incorrectly as April, and 2) it happened to work out that the date of May 30th ended a rather short page so it looked like it was the end of April.

One of the interesting bits is that the orders are there at all as none of the other months have included any orders or other appendix material at all, although they are noted in the right column of the diary pages.

There is something odd about the page numbers with this latest batch. If I'm working on a page and I want to refer back to the previous page in my profile, the page number that shows up on the profile page is the same as that of the live page I'm working on, when it really should be the previous page number. So that if I am working on page 10 and I refer back to the previous page, that page also shows it is page 10, although it should be page 9. This has happened in more than one diary in this latest batch.

    Posted

  • ral104 by ral104 moderator, scientist

At some point all the appendices and other bits and pieces were separated from the war diaries. David Underdown would know more than me, but I don't think they were kept at TNA. I'm not quite sure whether it's because the information is duplicated elsewhere, or because there was simply too much of it to preserve. Or something else entirely.

There's something generally a little odd about the latest batch of diaries, or at least in the way they've been uploaded. Everything's fine as far as tagging is concerned, but I'm chasing a few things up with the Zooniverse guys.

    Posted

  • David_Underdown by David_Underdown moderator

I think Brigadier Edmonds pulled various bits out when he was preparing the official histories. Sadly this included things like Part II orders which would have listed every individual posting in and out of the unit and the like. I think some appendices were removed where other units in the division also had copies.

November 1917 does indeed seem to be missing. Strange as this is a very detailed daily diary. It goes straight from an effective strength report on the 31 Oct to another one on 1 December, with no indication of what happened in November 1917. I am still struggling with the sequence of the last tagged pages. (AWD0003ixt, AWD0003j79, AWD0003j4p, AWD0003iyd and AWD0003izl). I think they all are appendices of Operation order N°103 (which I tagged a few days ago) and they appear in reversed order (number in right upper corner).

I think you're right, Erik. To be honest, in this situation the order doesn't really matter too much. It sounds like you're doing a good job with the report titles and picking up on any duplicate pages. The only other thing I can suggest is to include a reference to the operations order in the title or the comments box.

47 INFANTRY BRIGADE, 6 BATTALION CONNAUGHT RANGERS (1 DEC 1915 - 31 JUL 1918) I started tagging this diary on page 39. There was a page 40 and 42, but 41 and 43 are missing. In the "discuss this page" the pages are numbered differently; 41 is 113 and 43 is 115.

The numbers on the 'discuss this page' area refer to the diary as a whole - that is, the Connaught Rangers diary for the whole of their war service, rather than this 1915-1918 section. I'm not quite sure why it does that, but it can be a bit confusing.

Anyway, I checked the diary, and the missing pages are there, but I guess there must have been enough agreement amongst the existing taggers that we didn't need them to be tagged again, so the system skipped over them as you were tagging.

Image AWD0003fff I read the comments of Stork and Cynthia about this page that has the Roman numeral XXVIII on top. I think it should come after page 208. That page (and the previous ones) are numbered with Roman numerals, page 208 being numbered XXVI. The next pages (the first being 209) are numbered with arabic numerals and page 209 has number 28.

I am new to this. Are there any examples I can use for guidance to show a properly filled out page?

Hi - thanks for getting involved. Have you worked through the tutorial? That's your best bet. You can get to it by clicking on the 'Field Guide' link at the top of the classification screen and then clicking 'Restart the Tutorial', which is at the bottom right.

Don't worry about getting everything perfect. Each page is tagged by at least five people before being processed, so anything you miss or are unsure of us likely to get picked up by somebody else. And it's always worth asking here if you have a question - we'll always do our best to help.

Query from by scarabee .. Should we tag numbered trenches as places?” Your page link: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003nij

Welcome, do you mean the Grid numbers say on 14th? If so, these should be tagged in the Grid Ref Box . ExampIe: I. 20. c. 5. 8. (Grid Tag Ref Tag on left hand side of the diary)

PS If you go to the Discussion Board you will find a Question & Answer Section along with a useful tips section, which you may find helpful.

Some of the numbers on this page designate individual batteries that are either part of the 38th Brigade RFA or that are attached to the brigade. The other letter/number combinations are grid references and refer to specific points on a map used by the unit. On this page those references pertain to gun positions and the area that the brigade as a whole was assigned to cover. Sometimes grid references will relate to a trench, and in that case it is usually written as two references, which essentially translate to "from point A to point B"; anytime you see grid references, go ahead and tag them.

In some diaries, including this one, you may see comments such as "...shelling of 57 and 58...", or something similar. Those numbers actually do refer to trenches, but we don't tag them. As a rule, trenches that have an actual name, such as Black Watch Alley or Caledonia Avenue, are tagged using the name as it appears, but numbers are too ambiguous to make tagging them useful and may actually be confusing in the end. You can also tag such places as Krupp Farm or Von Kluck Cottage just as they are written in the diary.
