I don't think I've seen those before, either. I've read that both sides used guns originally intended for naval vessels along the Western Front, usually mounted on railroad cars because of their size and weight.

Yes, that'll be it. A lot of the railway guns were ex-naval artillery. This picture shows the sort of thing which might have done the deed Marie came across in the diary:
