Park vs Column

  • Stork by Stork

The diary I'm tagging alternates between the 4th Divl Ammunition Park and the 4th Divl Ammunition Column. What's the difference between a Park and a Column?

An Ammunition Column consists of dedicated military vehicles carrying artillery and small arms ammunition for the combatant unit to which the column belongs. I presume the ammunition was stored in the Ammunition Park, where it could be stored and collected.

An ammunition park was an Army Service Corps unit that worked with its designated division as a supply depot for ammunition. An ammunition column was also an ASC unit responsible for the distribution of the ammunition to the artillery brigades.

There's a bit of information here http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-army-service-corps-in-the-first-world-war/ under the heading of Mechanical Transport and also some in this thread from the Invision Zone http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/topic/156438-division-ammunition-column-1916-1918/

Sorry this took a while to answer. I have a new day job that hugely interferes with my usual OWD activity.
