The 48th Battery 36 Brigade RFA got an extract from a paper marked “The Contemptible British Army” sent to a paper at home, by an RE Officer – C R Moseley, extracted from a letter from a captured German Officer. Saying:-

“The English Soldier is the best trained soldier in the world. The English soldiers’ fire is 10,000 times worse than hell. If we could only beat the English it would be well for us, but I am afraid we will never be able to beat these English devils”.

This was read out to the men on 16th October 1914. Page link: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/subjects/AWD0003vmi

Not a very happy man and the war had just started!
