grid

This order gives a lot of grid references for the attack on Wytschaete. I wonder how the soldier in the field found these coordinates?

The soldier in the field relied on his officers with maps to guide the men to those points. Junior officers and NCOs regularly had instruction in map reading.

However, during the attack on 7 June 1917 the massive mine explosions changed the land so much that many units lost their way. I've tagged two diaries from that day and both reported men from other units being mixed in with their own.
