Great description here of gear worn/carried by the German unit responsible for a gas attack, as well as of the British trying different types of respirators in response.

Fantastic to get such a detailed description, but also quite chilling when you think about what they were up to...

This adjutant is particularly eloquent. The unit just entered the recently-bombed city of Ypres:

He's got a great way with words, doesn't he? It's quite a powerful thing to get a sense of somebody's voice like that. It makes it all even more real, despite the 100 or so years which separate us.

    What unit is this? Fascinating!

Cynthia, I believe Sarah is tagging the diary of the 2 CAVALRY DIVISION: 4 Cavalry Brigade: 3 (King's Own) Hussars. Going through the comments which we make, I matched this entry up with this Unit. On the diary page in question it mentions in last paragraph 3rd Hussars. which was only a little clue. It seems therefore to be the 2 CAVALRY DIVISION: 4 Cavalry Brigade: 3 (King's Own) Hussars. A very interesting page.

Yes, that's correct. Sorry, I forgot the page itself doesn't necessarily have the unit on it.

I've finally gotten to a place where the author's name is mentioned again, and I wanted to see if he became an author or journalist or something after the war. He did! I'm 99% sure this is Lieutenent-Colonel (Major at this point in the diary) Walter Temple Willcox, author of "The 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars in the Great War (1914-1919)", published 1925.

How fascinating - it's great to find out what people went on to do after the war (and very nice to hear they survived it too). Thanks for keeping us updated.
