Horses classified as D post war

  • atozvet by atozvet

I was not aware of the large numbers of cavalry horses that were so classified and sent off to abbatoirs by January 1919. Presumably the war Office had issued a directive to provide horse meat in a post war food shortage. Presumably the meat went to the civilian population

I hope so - at least then it would have served a purpose. I wonder if this was also motivated in part by a sudden desire to trim down, logistically speaking. With the war over, I imagine horses were suddenly seen as something of a burden in terms of cost and manpower required to maintain them. Pretty sad.
