No Christmas Truce for 2/Grenadier Guards

  • BJDICKERSON by BJDICKERSON

While many other British & German units were enjoying an unofficial impromptu Christmas Truce in 1914, 2/Grenadier Guards fought a fierce battle on 24 Dec in the vicinity of Bethune. They were attacked by the Germans, lost their front trench but successfully held their second line trench. They suffered 57 casualties including 17 killed. One of those killed was 2LT John H. G. Nevill who had only joined the battalion eight days before. The battalion was under heavy fire the following day until being relieved after nightfall.
