    Yes, many men filled out considerably while serving due to much better food. It was on top of your pay too (and you didn't pay for your accommodation), so a powerful incentive to sign up for many, particularly as many companies laid-off workers at the start of the war, and it was traditionally a quiet time of year in some jobs such as mining (as demand for coal was lower than in the winter).
