Gas Blanket

  • cyngast by cyngast moderator

Does anyone know what a gas blanket was?

I'm tagging the 5th Field Company Royal Engineers and in an entry for July 1917, when they were in the Givenchy sector, it says "Fitting gas blankets in Left Sub-sector."

I think it was a blanket treated with something to retard the action of gas that was hung from a frame over the doorway of a dugout. Since the commonly used gases were heavier than air, they were very aware of the risk of it drifting along trenches and finding the lowest level - usually the dugout.

I'll see if I can find something more about it.

That is interesting. I did a quick search on Google before posting my question, but I didn't see that. I really didn't find anything that answers my question. Maybe I just didn't ask it the best way for Google to process it.
