"The battle was one of the largest of World War I, in which more than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. "Wickipedia, The Battle of the Somme. The Battalion, 12th West Yorkshires was involved in this battle from the beginning in July 1916 and were loosing dozens of men daily. At That time they did not realize that the battle would go on for months with such heavy losses.
