Trench names

Were trenches given nicknames alphabetically? Here we have companies deployed to Cockburn, Coal, Cocoa, Cinema, Cupid, Cod, and Cuba. We also have Quarry, which could be an alliterative name, but might also just be an actual quarry; I can't tell.

I think it was highly varied. Often, battalions would choose names associated with their own place of origin, and I have never noticed any alphabetical link, but it certainly looks likely in the case you have that a C theme was chosen.

Trench maps were large sheets and were broken down into smaller squares with letters assigned to them. Often this letter will be used to assign trench names but other times they would be named by the unit in place at the time. The 51st (Highland) Division was in La Boisselle on the Somme in 1915 and they gave all the trenches Scottish names like "Dunfermline" or "Perth"
