First time I have seen this mentioned in a war diary.
Interesting articles and photographs in link: https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Russian+Sap+ww1
Russian Sap: Narrow trench dug like a mine-shaft so that the surface of the earth was not disturbed. A sap trench helped raiders to approach enemy lines.

Here's an aerial photo of one - it's labelled in the middle left of the image.

There are also a couple of descriptions here: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?/topic/29573-russian-sap/ on the Invision Zone forum from The Long, Long Trail website.

The second response in that thread made me laugh!
But also very useful descriptions. Thanks, Cynthia.
