A scheme is normally a training programme of some sort, often eg training for a particular attack, or some other sort of exercise. Possibly here though they are just helping to build new huts somewhere for accommodation?

I think that David is right that they were building huts. I've been tagging the 12th Irish Rifles, and they were also involved in a hutting scheme. Possibly even the same one. In that diary it was mentioned that the officers had gone out to reconnoiter for the hutting scheme, which sounds like they were looking for good locations for the huts. It seems like they were actually making a plan for rest area accommodations.
