I am tagging the 1 INDIAN CAVALRY DIVISION: Lucknow Cavalry Field Ambulance (1 Sep 1914 - 31 Dec 1916) . (March 1916) One chap was given 6 Strokes for being drunk! Has anyone else come across similar punishments?

Another suffered 6 Strokes for being improperly dressed and refusing an order by a British officer! Harsh, very harsh.

There's an interesting discussion of various punishments here: https://talk.operationwardiary.org/#/boards/BWD000000p/discussions/DWD0000q4t

I think in general, there were definite differences between the relationship officers in British regiments had with their men as opposed to those in Indian Army units. There was often a more paternalistic attitude in the latter, and a very different set of traditions and norms.
