I'd like to find out where to ask Qs that other people have probably asked many times before.

What is BAC in War Diary/Intelligence Summary. Date seems to be listed like a fraction: 2/15. And Hour seems to be listed in military time as simply 23.

So how would I tag these to ask about them? And what to people do when they can't read the handwriting?

BAC = Brigade Ammunition Column. 2/15 would probably be February 1915, 23(00) = 11pm

I later realized that BAC was part of Croix-du-Bac.

I was concerned that my lack of knowledge might be an issue. But I figured it out on a subsequent diary entry.

Not at all - we're happy to have you!

Don't worry about making mistakes. It takes a little while to get familiar with the tagging interface and the documents themselves. Each page is tagged by a minimum of five different people, though, so anything you miss or tag in error will be picked up by somebody else.

It sounds like you're doing exactly the right thing anyway - getting stuck in and having a go. Thanks again!
