From the context it looks like it's something that would indicate a possible method for a gas attack used by the Germans. A pipe for distributing gas?

This site talks about a Canadian regiment seeing "strange pipes sticking above the German breast-works" which were then used for distributing gas from cannisters below them: http://www.greatwar.nl/frames/default-houthulste.html Could be something similar?

Something along the lines of 'a hose pipe was reported in enemy trenches...this was the right size for asphixiating gases'.

I think @edinflo is right. They're reporting the presence of something which might be used to deliver a gas attack.
