Here are the links for the postcard entries pages 183 and 184. Never seen any postcard entries in any other diaries

Believe both out of order as the Postcard states “Appendix 1 to Operation Order Number 24. These 2 pages follow the June 1917 diary for the 94th Infantry Brigade Machine Company.

The following page 185 (next to tag) Is Appendix 1, 94th Machine Gun Company Operation Order Number 20. Dated 10th June 1917. By the way there is a note on diary page 175 - (dates 25-27th June 1917) which makes mention to Appendix 5 – Operation Order No. 24.

They must have run our of paper, so they wrote the information on a Church Army Postcard. The PTO page mentions Church Army Recreation Huts. (I believe there as a scarcity of paper in WW1).

I've not seen postcards used for entries either! I don't know whether there was a scarcity of paper overall or perhaps in this case the unit just didn't have any more at the moment.

I think it might be useful to point out that the label "Appendix 1 to Operation Order Number 24" means the postcard itself is an appendix to Order 24, while "Appendix 5 - Operation Order No. 24" means that Order No. 24 is the fifth appendix to that month's diary.

Cynthia, there are quite a few mentions on google of WW1 paper shortages and other shortages in WW1.
World War I Paper Shortage (1917-1919) Here is one of them: Link:

    https://irishsheetmusicarchives.com/History/World-War-I-Paper-Shortage.htm

During the World War I years of 1917 to 1919, the U. S. Government requested that industries using consumable products begin to conserve these materials -- including paper goods. A smaller 7” x 10” sheet music format was introduced by some publishers, shrinking the cover art and even condensing multiple pages of music.

    Also, Paper shortage in WW2.

Little story for you re paper shortage. I used to work for a Report Editor and type up her reports. She had very, very small neat writing. When I commented on it, she said that when at school they had to conserve paper and learn to write on postage stamps and put as many words as possible on them.

I have noticed a tag for #armistice - has it been added to the definitive hashtag tag list?

It's not on the list but I use it when a diary mentions the Armistice.

I don't know if we need to add it to the list. It seems more diaries never mention the Armistice than do. I just feel like it's something worth noting.

I don't use the tag but generally comment on the Armistice in the Comments box when tagging.

If you're going to comment on the Armistice, then you might as well use the hashtag so someone interested in how the Armistice was recorded in various diaries can find it.
