War Diaries Talk

To field ambulance, evacuated or struck off strength.

    Hello All,
Casualties in this diary are reported differently than I have seen in other diaries. Please see the bottom entry. Here he talks about unit strength and then continues "To Fd. Amb. 1 OR. From Fd. Amb. 2 OR. Evac 1 OR." And finishes "2 ORs struck off strength.".

My thinking is that that persons moved to and from field ambulance, evacuated or struck off strength are reflected in unit strength and casualty numbers. I do not tag these as casualties. Are other citizen historians doing it in the same way?

The 2 struck off strength will certainly have been reported previously - this indicates that they were going to be in hospital or whatever for sufficently long that it would be necessary to replace them. The others I would be inclined to report as casualites, the adjutant just seems to be breaking those down more than most do.

    Hi David,

Thanks for the answer. So, I will enter unspecified casualties when I encounter this sort of entry again.
