    R.A.F. R.E.8's = Single engined bi-plane, reconnaissance and R.A.F. R.E.5's = Single engined bi-plane, fighter

    Note that in this context R.A.F. = Royal Aircraft Factory, the builder of the 'planes, not Royal Air Force. They were built for the Royal Flying Corps before the R.A.F. was formed.
