  Why does the gazetteer not recognise Ypres?

  It should do. I just tried it and it suggested Ieper, which is correct.

  Perhaps the mapping service at http://geonames.org was temporarily unavailable.

  Ieper is the Flemish spelling of Ypres - could explain the confusion.
