'taking over' or 'picked up' horses

When the writer mentions 'taking over' or 'picking up' horses, presumably this means this Mobile Vet. Section is taking them for veterinary treatment? Otherwise, (apart from the occasional horse shot) there is no mention of the unit carrying out its' role.

I assume these are horses that were unable to carry on with the Unit because they were injured or exhausted and so were left for the Vet section to pick up - for example where they talk of picking up one horse on the road. They may have just needed rest, food and water in many cases I imagine and then back to the Units.
