Crater jumping

What is crater jumping, twice on this page? It sounds like a game, but I don't think so.

My best guess is that those men are waiting for a mine to be blown, after which they will run in and secure possession of the crater it makes. There may have been infantry soldiers also rushing in to occupy it, but being engineers these teams would likely have looked to any immediate structural issues, like signs a side might collapse.
