Never come across this one before: Equipment evaluation difficulties - Popham shutter and lamps
-
CO of the 1st Battalion Hampshire raises certain points re operations:
Failure to get in touch with our aeroplane. Difficulty in getting up Popham shutter and lamps. Popham shutter and lamps heavy, in addition the lamp is breakable, ours arrived in trench damaged and rendered useless. Neither apparatus suitable for rapid movement by short rushes in field.
See article - Trench signalling lamp - with photo.

Popham semaphore was developed in the previous century for the Admiralty, I think - named after its inventor. This thread:
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/topic/194657-ground-signalling-panels-facsimiles/
has a lot of detailed discussion about the Popham equipment, including technical drawings. It sounds like there were lightweight versions developed for infantry use, so perhaps the entry you've come across relates to an earlier form, Marie.
