What is Jack Johnson?

  • Stork by Stork

The 4th day mentions an enemy weapon- the Jack Johnson.

The 6th day has Lord Cavans Bde twice, and it's also on the 7th.

I can't find either of these in any of the online sources I tried. Anyone know?

A Jack Johnson is slang for a 15cm heavy artillery shell, or more specifically the impact of a 15cm heavy artillery shell. Lord Cavan's brigade was the 4th Guard's Brigade. He was commander at the time.

Jack Johnson. A 'Jack Johnson' was the British nickname used to describe the impact of a heavy, black German 15-cm artillery shell. Jack Johnson (1878-1946) was the name of the popular U.S. (born in Texas) world heavyweight boxing champion who held the title from 1908-15.
