What kind of event is this and why to another unit?

Erik, the colours are the unit's flag. Often new colours are consecrated, which is a kind of religious dedication ceremony. In this case, the 12th RIR were involved in the ceremony because they were part of the same brigade as the 9th (North Irish Horse) RIF, a unit which a large number of men from the disbanded 2nd North Irish Horse yeomanry battalion joined after being trained as infantry.
