If it was the infantry who carried out a dummy raid I should say it's a diversion. They do as if they are raiding in place A while the real raid takes place in place B. But I don't know what a dummy raid of the artillery is.

Dummy raids (fake attacks) were commenced along the German front line. When the battle began, the German troops were expecting just another dummy raid and were not prepared for a battle.

It looks like the artillery laid down a barrage that would appear to the enemy as if it was cover for a raid. This might draw the enemy troops to concentrate in that area of the trenches in preparation to repulse the raiders, leaving other parts of their line more lightly held. Or, since no raid developed with this barrage, it might lead the enemy to ignore the barrage for the real raid about 90 minutes later.
