38 officers and 388 other ranks: that's a lot of officers!!!

I wonder if that's because the other ranks were being demobilized and perhaps most of the officers were career cavalry men and staying with the brigade.

It also mentions that 1 Officer was demobilized. Of the 38 Officers it states that 5 were attached. So perhaps these 5 Officers were not part of their normal strength and and therefore their strength was increased to 38.

On another page I read: Lt Straker joined from 3rd echelon and taken on strenght. What is 3rd echelon?

They were troops operating away from the frontline areas, Erik, mainly dealing with administrative and communications tasks. For example, most infantry battalions left an orderly room sergeant at GHQ base in Rouen to deal with management of the unit's records and so on.

Second echelon troops were those providing services to frontline units, as well as units held back in reserve. They would include units like the mobile veterinary service.
