This diary seems mainly to focus on training and inspections. In the last 5 months it only mentions one supportive action in an attack. I can hardly believe they had such a quiet time. Is there a reason why this diary doesn't mention any fighting?

My first thought is that this is August, 1916, when most of the fighting was happening on the Somme. However, this page says they are at Vermelles, which was farther north near Loos, and a fairly quiet part of the line in 1916. During the spring of 1916, there weren't any significant battles until the Somme began.

It may also be a quirk of this particular unit's commanding officer that he thought drills and training and inspection were the things to record in the diary. That's one of the great wonders of the diaries--just how different they all are!
