A lieutenant who becomes an A.D.C.: was that considered to be a promotion?

Don't think promotion - 2/Lt Evans leaves brigade to become an ADC to General Headlam.

ADC in the Army - The term "Aide-de-Camp' is of French origin, meaning 'camp or field assistant'. The ADC was originally a military assistant in the field to a Sovereign, Chief of State, or General. They transmitted orders and supervised operations in the name of their commander, and even exercised delegated authority on occasions.

It would be an appointment to a specific job within the Army, similar to an adjutant in an infantry battalion, but not a promotion in rank.

It might also be considered an honor to be chosen for the job--or not, depending on the general's reputation!--but again, not a promotion in rank.
