    What is a dug-out captain? Pennycuick (author of diary) is rather critical for that captain: "he struck us as a absolute idiot ...."

    I think he probably means a captain they've rustled up from somewhere to do the job. The implication is that there was nobody else, he was all they could get, scraping the barrel, etc. In other words, they dug him out from somewhere.

    Usually someone who had retired from the army some time before the war and was "dug out" of retirement to rejoin because of the war
