How did the news from far distant battlfields reach the soldier ot the western front? Now it is about the Russian, but I read also about the Hartmannwillerkopf being lost by the French in the Alsace and the sinking of the Dresden in Chilean waters.

Erik, it's not something I know much about, but I would assume people would learn about things in letters from home, in newspapers (when they could get hold of them) and through official despatches.

It seems to me I read somewhere that news like that might be wired to the BEF headquarters and then relayed down the line. I think the reference said that news had come by wire to Brigade headquarters.
