    It's fun reading this private diary, but I wonder if tagging the names is usefull because the author, lt. pennycuick mostly mentions only the surname (no rank, no regiment, no first name)

    I think it's useful to tag all names, where possible - I agree that more information would be useful, but it might still be possible for people to identify individuals based on other things they might already know about them.

    For the examples on this page only one is actually just a name, Johnston, I suspect he may well be a fellow officer in the same unit. For Walker we are told he's a Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, and Officer Commanding Roads (so almost certainly an RE officer). Phil Combes we are told is HAC ie Honorable Artillery Company.

    The social realities of the time mean an officer's diary is almost certainly just talking about officers if no other info is given.
