Pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) (Fever).

It is defined as: A temperature greater than 38.3°C on several occasions. Accompanied by more than three weeks of illness.

Pyrexia (or fever) of unknown origin means there was no obvious cause of the fever, such as measles or typhoid. As your author says, many were likely influenza.

I've never heard of corya, but google takes me to chorea, and Sydenham chorea, which is caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat and rheumatic fever, both of which often cause fever. Today, it can be easily treated with antibiotics.

Cynthia, I think it is coriza, not corya. My father used to write his Z in the same way. http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/coryza

Thank makes a lot more sense. Thanks, Erik. A cold or an infection caused by a cold will also bring on a fever.

That's interesting, though. I've never heard that term before.
