Here's a photo: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search?query=western+front+bathtubs&items_per_page=10 These are German soldiers, but they, too, had to improvise.

Somewhere early on I believe we had a thread about all the unusual places and methods for bathing that were devised. Baths were taken in beer vats in a brewery, although without the beer, only water, and in the swimming bath in the insane asylum in Bailleul. They also had access to the baths at the pitheads of some of the mines south and west of Bethune.

Here's a photo of some men getting a bath: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205353311

I've also seen a photo of men bathing in wagons in a barn, but I don't seem to be able to find it. I've also seen photos of at least one copper tub that formed part of an officer's kit. I think I saw these in books since I can't seem to find them online.

'Private means' is a bit of a catch-all, isn't it? It covers the whole range from legitimate purchase to snaffling the locals' walls.

I think it probably just means the officers' own money rather than public money. Quite commonly seen "private means" as an occupation in censuses, meaning independently wealthy
