On 8/8/1914: after 10 officers is that 1 NCO and I suppose I don't tag the strenght of the ASC?

It's 1 WO - 1 Warrant Officer. You can count him in with the Other Ranks. And yes, you're right not to tag the ASC men.

On this page AWD0003tqh it seems as if ASC personnel can / should be a part of the Field Ambulance. If that is the case do I have to tag them?

The ASC men were attached to the field ambulance on a long-term basis, so if the unit strength is counted for rations, I would think they would be included.

They were also under the command of the commanding officer of the field ambulance. I've tagged diaries where the C.O. dealt with discipline issues involving them.

I'll ask Rob to check this thread again.

By the way, there is an article here re The ASC MT Motor Ambulance Convoy Companies -Specialised motorised transport used on the lines for evacuation of casualties.

Yes...my first reaction is to not include them, but Cynthia makes a good point about them being on the ration strength while attached. This is a slightly different arrangement to other situations where men from another unit might have been attached temporarily for one reason or another. I guess because the ASC contingent was integral to the FA operations it probably does make sense to count them in this case.

This question comes a bit late, but I wonder if this "personal" diary of Maj. Thurston concerns only the 13th Field Ambulance or could there be other Field ambulances involved?

It should cover just the 13th Field Ambulance. It is the official war diary for that unit.

However, field ambulances sometimes worked together, especially when there were major combat operations going on. If other field ambulances are mentioned, just tag them as "Other Unit."
