    It's a bridge that spans a dry area, such as a trench or a canal that is no longer used and has dried up. In WW1, they were needed to span trenches as the armies--either one--advanced over trench systems.

    Quite a detailed description of the plan in this diary. Many diaries that go as far as June 1919 don't include much in the way of detail by that point.

    I think it's the OC who writes the diary now and june (by the way I think I tagged somewhere july and 1917 instead of june and 1919) is a month of training and he gives every week notes on the training: what they did, how they did it and what could be done better... and he ends with an overview in tabular form of the four weeks training.
