In the upper right corner there is probably a servicenumber (412238?) But that number corresponds with a sapper called James Scott and not with a L/Cpl John Scott.

I assume you have looked him up on Lives of the First World War. I've had this happen, too. In these cases, I always tag the name and number as they appear in the diary.

The information in Lives is sometimes wrong. You have to remember those medal cards were written 100 years ago, and people made mistakes. I've seen misspelled names and numbers where the digits are transposed or a 3 in a diary is an 8 in Lives. I even found a case where I think two men had been combined into one card!

So I always use what the diary says where the diary and Lives don't agree. The intent of our project is to record the information as it appears in the diary.

With the assistance of the Infantry the 1st briges were placed. The other bridge was placed shortly after as a combined bridge.

The Infantry scrambled across the stream followed by the others across the bridge and advanced over the barbed wire across the bank.

This covering party was a Sussex Lewis Gun Team who stuck there throughout, when others fell back.

Another party of the Infantry had worked their way up the road and along the bank from the south.

Northern party arrived, 1st 16ft bridge placed across enabling 1st 23ft lever bridge from Southern Party to be dragged across it.

This enabled the 1st troops to get over it. Single 23ft bridge supplemented by plain 23 ft bridge by Northern party.

I believe the men in the margin were part of parties placing the bridges across the stream of the Canal.
