  They didn't use glass for the windows, but linen. Must not have been comfortable in winter.

  I can't imagine anyplace on the front was very comfortable in the winter! I suppose glass windows would have been difficult to transport without breaking and vulnerable to shelling if they were close enough to the line.

  Oiled linen would repel some rain and wind if it was well tacked down all around the frame.
