May I conclude that the men of this company had their own opinion about military discipline?

They may have, but I don't think that was the reason for the saluting practice. I've seen it in other diaries, too.
I'm thinking that maybe because this unit has been so busy repairing the damage the Germans left behind, they have not had much time for military drill and practice, so maybe they have become a bit sloppy and less precise than they should be.
