    What is a mine head?

Usually a mine head is the point at which you enter a mine, so here I would assume they are the entrances to any underground workings going on in the area.

Didn't know that the entrances to a mine were so close to front line.

I think that it may mean the head of a sap or gallery dug under or at least towards the enemy line that will be used for a mine.

In the area around Loos a mine head might well be an entrance to an actual coal mine, but as far as I know, the area around Meaulte was not a mining region.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my original answer. I meant exactly what Cynthia says much more clearly! 😄 Military tunnelling, rather than commercial mining.

Erik, the tunnel entrances had to be reasonably far forward to minimise the distance they had to penetrate below ground.
