remained in billets

The Batteries stayed two months (January and February, maybe even 3 if they stayed there also in December) in their billets. Any idea why?

The cavalry divisions tended to stay in one place all winter. They weren't needed at the front, where no large battles occurred during the winter months, so they stayed in the same billets. Although I think the Royal Horse Artillery may have been more active than the regular cavalry later in the war because artillery was more useful than cavalry units, in the winter of 1914-1915, the British were suffering from a shortage of shells. Even the Royal Field Artillery did as little firing as they could.
