Stuart and Stewart

Was the author of the diary not certain of the spelling of the captain's name? Also on previous pages one gets a mix of Stuart and Stewart.

It's hard to say why the author switched back and forth in spelling Capt. Stuart's name.

It appears from both Lives of the First World War and the CWGC site that Stuart was the correct spelling. His full name was William Bruce George Stuart, killed on 22 November 1917.

I haven't looked at Lives or any of the diary pages for this, but one reason names may have been misspelled is because of the number of people passing through regiments. If the adjutant wasn't completely familiar with them and didn't have their records to hand, he may have just taken a guess at the name. Not necessarily the case here, but possible.

In this case, Stuart and Stewart are both fairly common names as well, so easy to mix up.
