  Did the troops in the frontline know when their artillery would be active?

  I know that in some cases, when the enemy's line was close to the British front line and the British artillery was going to try to do wire cutting, the troops would be pulled back out of the front line.

  I think that the battalion headquarters were supposed to be notified, but I don't know if that information always filtered through to the men in the line. Or even if the HQ always got the message.
