    In this diary it strikes me that the trenches are reguarly visited by the brigadier general or the major general.

    I have noticed that in some diaries you see this happening regularly and in others there is no mention at all of visits by generals. I don't know if this was something they could decide or if it was considered part of their duties to visit the trenches every so often. It could be that all units received regular visits and/or inspections, but that many never recorded it.

    To me, it seems to indicate a stronger connection between the battalion and their brigade and division when you see it happening like this. I also sense that these battalions, brigades, and divisions from Ireland had closer connections among them than the English units.
