A shillelaghs should be an Irish fighting stick, but why should the bombers carry shiilelags?

Shillelaghs are Trench Raiding Clubs - See Image and Article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trench_club).

Trench clubs probably used for hand to hand combat in close quarters along with knives, daggers and hand grenades.

For close-quarters defence, Erik. If the bombing party had to fight hand-to-hand with the enemy, a shillelagh would be much more useful than a rifle (and certainly a bomb, unless they wanted to kill themselves as well).
