    Infantry Base Depot

The IBD was a holding camp. Situated within easy distance of one the Channel ports, it received men on arrival from England and kept them in training while they awaiting posting to a unit at the front.

This is the page on The Long, Long Trail website that Marie took her information from http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/other-aspects-of-order-of-battle/infantry-base-depots-in-france-1914-1918/ You may also see it referred to in the diary as just Base or Depot.

The 16th I. B. D. seems to be the one these battalions in the 16th (Irish) Division were using. The 8th Royal Dublin Fusiliers diary has frequent entries about men arriving from that I.B.D.
